OUR VISION & MISSION

To Prevent and End Homelessness.

To ensure all people in the Greater Sooke Area have access to safe, affordable, appropriate, long-term housing. With supportive services and connections to the community-based supports people need to keep their housing and avoid returning to homelessness.

OUR HOMELESSNESS STRATEGIC PLAN

IT'S COLD OUT THERE!

On February 24, Sooke Shelter Society is hosting the Coldest Night of the Year, a 2 + 5 km winterrific walk hosted in 190+ cities across Canada in support of our work in Sooke with people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.

WE MUST NOT LET THEM FALL

It became apparent that the Greater Sooke Area needed a community-owned solution to prevent and end homelessness.

Everyone has a fundamental human right to housing.

As a result of this, Sooke Shelter was formed in October, 2017 by founders Sherry Thompson and Earl Bretherton.

In honor of our past, present and future generations, Sooke Shelter was incorporated and became a Not-for-Profit Society in August, 2018.

Sooke Shelter Society is a grassroots Registered Charity working together to increase access to affordable housing for those with lower-income, to prevent and end homelessness in Sooke, BC.

We care about our community and believe that safe, decent, affordable housing benefits the entire community – economically, socially, and environmentally.

Through advocacy, we raise awareness of the critical value of stable, affordable housing to people’s education, employment, health, and overall well-being.

As part of our community housing strategy, we need a rights-based national housing strategy that is also adequately funded and is developed in consultation with all levels of government to ensure that everyone has the right to secure, adequate and affordable housing.

Sooke Shelter Society offers shelter, temporary outdoor survival shelter gear for those experiencing homelessness in the Greater Sooke Area.

Support is provided for people over 18 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in need of immediate basic necessities such as food, clothing, outdoor living supplies and or have self-identified as engaging in substance use, are having challenges accessing housing or have mental health concerns.

We connect with our most vulnerable, approaching each person with compassion, empathy and understanding, treating all with dignity, respect, fairness and equality.

By supporting Sooke Shelter Society, your donation will go towards providing our most vulnerable citizens with food, tents, tarps, sleeping bags, camp stoves, other shelter-related costs and other basic living necessities.

Your contribution will ensure that all vulnerable people who are homeless or living in extreme poverty have access to food, critical outdoor shelter and other basic living necessities. It will bring a stronger sense of belonging and engagement among individuals with multiple issues and barriers (homelessness, poverty, mental health and substance use) in the Sooke Region, thereby enhancing our community’s health and well-being.
